The New Orleans Pelicans were originally founded as Charlotte Hornets in 1988. In 2002 the Hornets moved to New Orleans and from then on called themselves New Orleans Hornets. In 2013, the old name and history of the Hornets was parted with before 2002 and has been called New Orleans Pelicans since then, which also fits the region much better. The team colors, the logo and the jerseys were also changed so that there was a completely new beginning. The New Orleans Hornets play in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference. The home games are played at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans in front of up to 16,867 spectators.
When the Hornets moved to New Orleans in 2002, they had a good force. The team around Baron Davis made it into the playoffs several times. In 2005 the Hornets had to move to Oklahoma City because of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina and were now called New Orleans / Oklahoma City Hornets. That year, Chris Paul was drafted and quickly became the team's franchise player. With players like Peja Stojakovic, David West and Tyson Chandler, they won their division in 2008, but lost in the playoffs to defending champions San Antonio Spurs. In late 2010, the NBA had to buy the franchise because the previous owner was no longer financially able to keep the team. At that time, Chris Paul was supposed to be traded to the Lakers for Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom, but the NBA vetoed it because they felt the deal was not fair. Ultimately, Paul was traded to the Clippers and the rebuilding of the Hornets began. In 2012, the new franchise player Anthony Davis was drafted and with him a new era began when the team renamed the New Orleans Pelicans in 2013. In 2016, Davis was joined by DeMarcus Cousins, another star, but the team never really held its own in the West. When Anthony Davis requested a trade, he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers for some young talent just before the 2019 season. In the following draft, the Pelicans chose the future face of the franchise with the first pick: Zion Williamson.
