The Oklahoma City Thunder were originally founded as Seattle SuperSonics in 1967. In 2008, it moved and renamed Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder play their home games at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City in front of up to 18,203 spectators. The team colors are blue, gold and orange.
When the New Orleans Hornets temporarily played in Oklahoma City, the NBA realized that the market was ready for its own franchise. With the Seattle SuperSonics, a team was quickly found that was ready to move, as the city of Seattle did not want to accommodate the franchise with a modernization of the arena. In 2008 the Thunder started in Oklahoma City with players like Kevin Durant and rookie Russell Westbrook. In 2009 rookie James Harden was added, who in the future should develop into an MVP just like the other two players. In 2012, the trio made it to the NBA final, but lost to the Miami Heat around LeBron James. In the following season, James Harden was traded to the Rockets because they could not agree on a new contract. Nevertheless, the Thunder still played at the top in the west when injuries didn't put them off their feet. When they faced the Golden State Warriors in the fight for a place in the NBA Finals in 2016, and lost 3: 4 after a 3-1 lead, Kevin Durant decided to leave the team. Although the Thunder could no longer keep up in terms of sport, Russell Westbrook put in a monster season with a triple double on average - something that no one has managed since Oscar Robertson in 1962. In 2017 Westbrook got another star with Paul George and with Carmelo Anthony a new superstar trio should lead the Thunder back into the finals. However, the experiment was unsuccessful, so that first Anthony was traded for the German Dennis Schröder to the Hawks and then Paul George was sent to the Clippers for talents. Due to these circumstances, the only remaining star Westbrook was given up and given to the Rockets in exchange for Chris Paul. Since then, the Oklahoma City Thunder have been trying to rebuild.
