Detroit Lions Caps

The Detroit Lions are one of the oldest teams in the entire NFL. The Detroit Lions had four championships before the Super Bowl Era before 1970, but no other title has been added since then. Nevertheless, the Detroit Lions Caps are particularly popular with older football fans in German-speaking countries, because they saw Barry Sanders play one of the best running backs in NFL history in the Detroit Lions jersey.

The Detroit Lions are one of the oldest teams in the entire NFL. The franchise was founded in 1930 under the name Portsmouth Spartans. Four years later, the team was bought by George A. Richards and moved to Detroit, Michigan. Based on the fact that the lions are the kings of the jungle, Richards chose the name Detroit Lions in the hope of being the kings of the league with them. In the early years, Lions lived up to this expectation. Already in the second year of the Detroit Lions' existence, 1935, they won the first NFL Championship with a final victory over the New York Giants. After the two then stars of the Lions ended their careers with Dutch Clark and Ernie Caddel, ten less successful years followed, in which it a season with 11 defeats without a win and the last 0-0 game in NFL history to date. But after these years were over, a dynasty developed in Detroit in the 1950s. With seven Hall of Famers in the squad today, the Detroit Lions won the championship in 1953, 1954 and 1957. Since then, however, the Lions have been unable to bring another title to Michigan, making them the team with the longest active National Football League title drought behind the Arizona Cardinals. They are also the only team that has played every season since the merger between the NFL and AFL in 1970, but has never made it to the Super Bowl. Even the legendary Barry Sanders could not change that in his creative period between 1989 and 1998. Even though the running back is still one of the best players who ever held this position, he was never granted a deep playoff run.

The team colors of the Detroit Lions have hardly changed since it was founded. Even then, Honolulu blue and silver were chosen as the primary colors of the Lions. The logo initially featured a football player wearing blue pants and a red jersey riding a brown, then a yellow lion. In 1961 the logo was then adapted to the uniform color scheme of the Lions and from then on only showed a blue-contoured, white-filled lion in front of a blue and silver stripe. The first form of the logo, which is still in use today, finally came in 1970 and was still valid in this variant until 2002. This showed a blue lion standing on its hind paws with a white blue outline. Some minor changes have been made to this variant in the recent past. In 2003, the Honolulu Blue Lion got a black outline before it was supplemented in 2009 with a face, a roaring mouth and a mane. The last change to the primary logo is still fresh and was only made in 2017. The color of the contour was changed from black to silver. For the only active alternative logo, the lion is based on the word mark Detroit Lions. On Detroit Lions Caps, the primary logo today is mostly in Honolulu blue or silver. However, there are also retro versions, for example the 59Fifty Onfield Edition Cap, with the white lion in front of a blue and a white stripe.
